Firefox 3.6 Annoyance
(with comments)

I upgraded to Firefox 3.6 this morning. One thing that has changed is the position of newly opened tabs. In the past, when I middle-clicked a link, the page opened at the end on the tab list. Now it opens directly to the right of the active tab.

It's weird how a small change like that can be so disruptive to my productivity. I've probably wasted 45 seconds today by activating the wrong tab.

So I went searching for a fix, and here it is: Firefox 3.6 Fix - Open New Tabs in Far Right.

Now, everything is back to normal.

Downloaded the same, and I'm a middle clicker too. Mine is fixed. What I don't like now is the website indicator thingy at the bottom is in white print and is hard to see.

    Great, I can't wait.

That's how Chrome does it. I imagine Firefox will start to pick up some of Chrome's other innovations. Ultimately, we need to be able to adjust the settings for these minor changes so we can suit it to our own habits.

Odd, 3.6 has always opene at the far right for me and I don;t have that extension. I also don't have a middle click of course.

    I don't know what middle-clicking is, but I'm guessing it's the same as Ctrl-click?

My new tabs have always opened next to the current tab, so that's not a problem for me.

What I don't like is the new squiggly line to indicate misspelled words in emails and comments. It's too obtrusive. I think it was just an red underline before, which I didn't mind.

Now I turn off the spell-as-you-go feature and turn on spellcheck at the end of an email, which is okay, I suppose, but it's not an improvement. They fixed something that wasn't broke.

I gave up on Firefox and switched to Chrome developer version. Faster, cleaner, and uses less screen real estate.

I like having the new tab open next to the original tab instead of having to find it somewhere yonder to the right if I've opened yet more tabs.

Had no idea what a 'middle click' was until this AM. Laptop. But I did learn the Ctrl + left click trick. This is one educational blog.

It just goes to show that you can't please all of the people all of the time. I sort was sort of puzzled to start with but now I prefer it.

If Microsoft tabs will have a message that says if you wish to open the new tab on the far right click here or here to open next to the the previous tab click here. Then there will be another message box saying would you like IE to remember your settings - Y/N with a box saying never show this message again. Then an 'are you sure box' and after that even if you saved your settings all the boxes will still come up each time you open a new link.

    Sorry was I being cynical?

45 seconds! Damn! You realize you'll never get those back? They're gone for good. What a shame!

I didn't like it because I couldn't use my ad blocker. I switched back to 3.5

    @dennis
Chrome now has an ad blocker.

Ad Blocker Plus works fine with 3.6. You just need to update it.

You can also change the way misspelled words are indicated. You need to add a new pref. See:

I did check my version of ad blocker and sure enough it was an older version. I will update both soon. Thanks for the input.

I switched back to 3.5.n too. Norton wouldn't work with it. happened when 3.5 first came available. gotta wait a month or so for you guys to get the bugs out for the rest of us.

    Thanks!

Norton? You mean Symantec? Isn't that the software that makes your computer run at half speed?

At one point, Symantec bought the rights to Peter Norton's name. There was a time when Peter Norton was a well-respected name in software. Now, I just associate it with software from a company that scares people so they will pay them money for useless software.

You're right, it's Symantec. It does seem to slow my system. I like password manager.

I;m sure I could do better. Too lazy to switch before the subscription runs out.

Never knew that about Peter Norton.

    ...for useless software.

Isn't the software useful for av/trojans etc? gotta have something.

I'm using TabMixPlus - a great plugin for FF where you can setup about everything just as you want (ie open a bookmark in a new tab) - works fine for me.

Mine just opens them on the far right anyway

Thank you, sir. I just middle-clicked the link. I will check it out.

It reminds me of Excel going to a ribbon. It still takes me twice as long to do anything with Excel as I have to constantly look for things. I don't use Excel frequently, so I didn't find the ribbon to be a useful improvement. It just hid the things that I could previously find easily.

I use Google as my interface to Excel now! I don't even try to figure out where something might be on the ribbons.

I can't believe you wasted a whole 45 seconds today. I like the new way of doing it.

Problem I have with Firefox now is that it still runs after you click off the browser. The only way I can turn it off is via Task Manager. I've been using Chrome more often.

I tried Chrome but missed my add-ons. Does chrome have add-ons like firefox?

Wombat: Yes, it does. Even Adblock.
