Teacher Won’t Fingerprint
(with comments)
In Texas: Teacher claims fingerprinting is 'Mark of the Beast'.
A 22-year veteran kindergarten teacher in the Texas Bible Belt could lose her job for refusing, on religious grounds, to give fingerprints under a state law requiring them.
The evangelical Christian, Pam McLaurin, is fighting a looming suspension, claiming that fingerprinting amounts to the "Mark of the Beast," and hence is a violation of her First Amendment right to practice her religion. Her case is similar to a lawsuit by a group of Michigan farmers, some of them Amish, challenging rules requiring the tagging of livestock with RFID chips, saying the devices are also the devil's mark.
More:
Her attorney, Scott Skelton, said his client believes that the computerized fingerprinting, in which her fingerprints will be stored in a database, is the mark addressed in Revelation. The teacher does not believe that it is merely coincidence that Revelation says only those with the mark on his forehead or on his hand' will be able to buy or sell, since only those teachers who comply with fingerprinting requirements will keep their jobs, he said.

Fingerprinting teachers is an important step in keeping sickos out of the classroom. - By Mike Woodhouse. Comment posted 06-Nov-2009 @09:02am:Who'd have thought the policy would work so quickly and so well? Although I suppose losing her job would affect her ability to purchase Canadian or Mexican slaves, and that must be some sort of infringement of her rights, surely?

I don't see the similarity, except both parties are a) stupid and b) religious. Is Ms. McLaurin claiming that Satan put those fingerprints on her fingers? - By scot. Comment posted 06-Nov-2009 @10:00am:Are there degrees of religious stupidity? Is believing in God just as stupid as believing in the bible? Is believing the Bible is the Word of God as stupid as believing what it says? If I believe in God and believe in the Bible and believe its Word, am I all the more stupid for acting on my beliefs? Obama says he believes in God. Is he an idiot or a liar? I return to the idiot line.

Yes. Tell me you believe in God? I don't have a problem with that.
Tell me you believe every word of the bible? I believe you are an idiot. - By Don Coyote. Comment posted 06-Nov-2009 @10:16am:Fingerpainting is the Mark of the Pre-Schooler.
- By Supai. Comment posted 06-Nov-2009 @10:21am:"A 22 year old veteran teacher"? Did she start teaching at 12? What a maroon.

- By Supai. Comment posted 06-Nov-2009 @10:23am:Oops, sorry, read that wrong. How has she taught for 22 years without being fingerprinted yet? Ten years ago I had to go through a background check just to chaperone on a field trip. A daytime, school-hours field trip. Not to mention what nonsense she might teach the kiddos. Get her out of there.

- By Bisbonian. Comment posted 06-Nov-2009 @10:36am:give HER a glass of water...
- By Don Coyote. Comment posted 06-Nov-2009 @10:53am:"...a mark on their right hand and on their foreheads..." is what it says quite clearly in the Bible. Your right hand. And your forehead.
This is still bugging me. Something along the lines of "how can some people be so stupid?" Now I'm wondering, though, because I've never checked prior to a few minutes ago. Do we have toe-prints on our toes or are mine just worn off from lots of walking?
If you want to know how stupid some people are, ask my wife. She's been working hospital switchboard and admissions in the middle of flu hysteria. My favorite was all the self-diagnosed people who think they are suffering from 'respiratory distress' because their nose is runny and they can't breathe through it. - By Don Coyote. Does she also believe that taxes are the mark of the beast? Try not paying your taxes and see how fast they stop you from buying and selling. - By Tom Woad. Comment posted 06-Nov-2009 @12:20pm:

- By Christopher. Comment posted 06-Nov-2009 @05:14pm:I agree with Bisbonian, they should just surreptitiously lift Her prints, just like I'm collecting DNA from the Candy drawer...
