TV News Breakdown
(with comments)

From a recent study: Local TV News in the Los Angeles Media Market (PDF).

Only 2:10 of teasers? I would have guessed five minutes devoted to telling you to stay tuned for something else.

Or more. They probably measured by segment. If a thirty second bit between commercials was all teaser, it went into the teaser pile. If they spent a third of another "news" segment on hyping what was coming up, and two thirds on "news", then it went into the news pile.

Now, break it down into "real news" vs. "lame news" and see what we have.

I occasionally watch a bit of network and local news (seldom not ten minutes of either), and get most of my television news from BBC World News and PBS NewsHour.

In Spokane, Sports and Weather would switch places with Non-Local news - it's the worst local news on the planet, I think. Not only that, but all three network news channels do the same thing at the same time, so if you get disgusted with all the sports coverage on one channel, it's pointless to switch to another. I honestly think anyone in Spokane who relies on local news to tell them what's going on in the world hasn't a clue.

I'm sure my local news half-hour show has much less 'non-local' news than that pie graph. Don't most (all?) of us have the other half-hour filled by the national network?

30 minutes minus 8:25 of ads leaves 21:45, of which 2:10 is teasers? That's ten percent, after ads, and it's nearly 2/3 of the time devoted to sports.

Still, it does seem like more when you actually watch them.
